Is it just me, or does it seem like the freedom of the press is being violated when the President will not permit the media from showing pictures of dead soldiers?

With lots of money, I think I would spend a considerable amount on a very special collection. I would set aside a room for this special collection. Weekly I would add to this collection. This collection would consist of those overly sentimental decorative items advertised in magazines: precious dog figurines, a Harly Davidson eagle on a plate, an American Indian standing proud with a howling wolf in the rear, adorible babies in supremely cute situations, like a ball cap too big covering the eyes. It would be the trippiest room in the whole house.

You know the rack, the tourture device they would use to beat a confession out of a heretic in the good old days? You know, where they stretch the guy like in Braveheart (I think that was the rack --its been a long time since I've been on one).

Well, this must be what we mean when we speak of racking our brain. You know, like when you can't remember somthing or it is on the tip of your tounge, you put your brain to the rack, so to speak, in order to get it to cough up the information you need.

I am quite proud of my moles. It is like being a pokka-dotted human. What more could I want!

Well, I could use a few months off of work. Why can't we become a socialized nation like Germany? So what if the chances of becoming a milionaire are slimmer in a socialized country than in a capitalist/socialist hybrid like our own. Already, I have just as good of a chance at winning the lotery as I do of making 10mil. At least in a socialist country, regular shmoes like myself get huge vacations.

Viva la Socialisma!

I heard in the news that there are a bunch of cool people going to Big Sur this weekend. In light of the update, I changed my gardening plans and have decided to follow them up there. I figure if I'm around enough cool people I might be able to pick up a few of their habits.

Prophesy time!

Alright, I'm going to foretell the future cause of Amercia's downfall: Presidential term limits.

Due to our system of 8 year max presidential term limits, presidential canidates are unable to address and act on problems that require long term solutions. They are locked in a system that requires them to make short term, popular policies.

In particular I am thinking about the national debt. Right now, we are make $13 billion a year intrest payments. We are not touching the principle. And each year the interest increases. It is like having a huge credit card debt and only making the minimum payments.
A president cannot begin to pay this off. The reason: as each president canidates, they make promises to spend public money in ways that will give immediate short term benefits. Republicans give public money back to the weathly and defense contractors; Democrats give it to the poor and infrastructure contractors. Neither have been able to increase taxes and start paying off the debt.

Why?
To do so would make them un-electable. No one wants taxes raised -but there are a lot of people willing to do it to defend the country or help the poor and better our infrastructure. Both effects of both policies are felt within the presidentail term.

Were a president to raise taxes and start making payments on the debt, he would be spending public money in a way that the public would not feel or notice, or even understand.

Even when we had a budget surplus, during the end of the Clinton administration, I don't think much of the surpluss was put towards the debt. This was one of Gore's promises, but who knows if he would have done it.

And yes, it is term limits that feed into this dreary situation. Term limits, which solve one problem with one hand (long term lousy presidents) and cause another problem with the other hand (financial destruction).

I can't help but think that optimism sucks.

Optimism, that is, about this life.

Give me that good old fashioned heavenly optimism any day --I'll buy it at any price.

Optimism is at the core of the mass's opiate.

Ya see, Marx's insight that religion is the opiate of the masses was soon replaced with Mathew Arnold's push to make art the opiate of the masses. Now, at the core of both opiates is optimism. With out the carrot at the end of the stick, we would stop showing up at work. And then how are those who own the means of production going to dine on goose and port?
