Ever heard someone say, "that movie/book had no plot."?

This bugs me. I think it is totally impossible for a movie or book to lack a plot.

What is plot, afterall? Isn't it just the action/movement/events/happenings of a book/movie?

A movie/book can have more or less plot; they can have tightly knit or fragmented plot; plot can be coherent, incoherent, chronological or not, consistent or not, difficult or easy to follow, but I don't think it can lack plot altogether. Even a blank screen for 5 minutes, if it is called a movie, has a plot. Its plot is this: blankness for 5 minutes. Sure this is crappy plot and would bore the heck out of most sane people, but it still has plot.

I think sometimes people use the word 'plot' when they mean 'point' or 'meaning.' Let's recomend that they stop such tom-foolery.
